Genova is the overall Wild Card Winner of Your Shot Brisbane in 2016! Having completed her first international set at Sunburn in India, we sat down with Genova to discuss the highlights of her time abroad, her experience in the Your Shot competition, suggestions for this year’s hopeful applicants and goals for the year ahead!
Talk us through your time at Sunburn in India! From take-off to touching back down in Australia!
Leaving for Sunburn was one of the most exciting times of my life, I couldn’t feel more elated to be sharing the main stage with some of the biggest acts that I’ve been listening to for years. Everything about India was captivating, the locals were welcoming and friendly and to be able to share the experience with Sarah, the half of our duo, Ghosted that we formed shortly after meeting at Your Shot was fantastic!
We were both welcomed back stage at Sunburn and able to meet all the artists, talk music and production, we still keep in touch with a fair few!
How were you feeling as you stepped up on stage?
Stepping up on stage I felt a mixture of emotions from nervousness to utter excitement. The stage set-up was incredible and the crowd were so energetic, the type of crowd that feeds off your energy! My hands were shaking at the start of my set but I soon felt at home behind the decks with the crowd going crazy in front of me!
Talk us through your set. What did you play?
I played quite a mixture of music, like I did during my set at Your Shot – a bit of trap, bass house, a remix as Ghosted (my new duo act) and an unreleased original we’ve collaborated on with Major Minor! So being able to play our own material on stage was an epic and unforgettable experience!
What was the highlight of your time at Sunburn?
Highlight would be playing obviously but whilst we were backstage we met some huge artists like Armin Van Buuren and KSHMR so we were a bit in awe. There are a few artists we keep in contact with to get feedback on our unreleased tracks and we hopefully plan to catch up with some of them in the future!
Why did you enter Your Shot?
I entered as a Wild Card, I had been DJing for about six months prior to Your Shot and was encouraged by past contestants who highly recommended it. I was excited to meet like minded people passionate about music!
What was the best part of the whole Your Shot experience?
I can’t pinpoint one best part, it’s the whole journey. From the first days of feeling accomplished for just trying something new and meeting people who share your passion and now, still continuing to run into people when you’re out who have shared that journey with you, it’s a great feeling. The trip overseas was not only an amazing memory but gives you that drive to constantly do better.
Has your music style changed since Your Shot?
My music style is constantly evolving! Since my time in the Your Shot competition I’ve moved on from Genova and have formed a duo group, called Ghosted, alongside fellow Your Shot contestant Sarah! If it wasn’t for Your Shot we would never have met!
What are your goals for the year ahead?
Production and Live sets! As Ghosted, we’ve set clear goals for 2017, we’ve released a few remixes but we’re in the process of finishing some originals and working on live sets once we have enough content!
Where can people catch you playing?
We’re lucky enough to now be residents of The Met, playing at Ransom and GPO in Brisbane. We have a few gigs up and down the coast and may be heading up North QLD soon!
Any advice for people considering entering Your Shot?
If you’re passionate about music, do it! You’ll make friends for life and learn something new about yourself. It’s a journey you do not want to miss!
