Dekkadence is the overall Contestant Winner of Your Shot Sydney in 2016! Having just returned home from her first international set at ZoukOut in Singapore, we sat down with Dekkadence to discuss the highlights of her time abroad, her experience in the Your Shot competition, suggestions for this year’s hopeful applicants and goals for the year ahead!
Talk us through your time at ZoukOut – From the moment you boarded the plane to when you touched down back in Australia!
From the moment I packed my bags, practicing my set and my crazy dance moves I started to feel this overwhelming feeling of “Wow this is actually happening! I’m going to be performing at ZoukOut!”. I couldn’t sleep on the plane, I was so excited to experience Singapore as an artist. As soon as I arrived in Singapore it hit me! The setting of Zoukout was incredible, metres to the beach, three magnificent stages each with their own style, sand on the dance floor and palm trees all around. It was paradise!!
How were you feeling when you stepped out onto the Star Stage at Zoukout?
Before stepping out on the stage I was incredibly nervous – filled with butterflies! As soon as I jumped up behind the decks and pressed play, the adrenaline kicked in and I was the happiest I had ever been. LED lights behind me, music blasting and my friends and family on the dance floor amongst the crowd at Zoukout.
Talk us through your set? What did you play?
My set was very house orientated, I started off with Garage House to warm up with and moved into some Ghetto House and Tech House. I ended with an old favourite of mine, a remix of Deadmau5’ ‘Strobe’ which was such a well-rounded ending to my set! I also during my set to bust out a little dance routine, it wouldn’t be a Dekkadence set without a dance routine!
Did you have a favourite act over the 36 hour beach party that is Zoukout?
I had a few favourite acts! Dillon Francis was amazing, Fritz Kalkbrenner, Hot Since 82, TIGA, KSHMR, Ghetto and Andrew Tang were all incredible!
How did your family and friends react when you told them you would be playing at Zoukout?
My friends and family were so excited they all bought tickets straight away and did not want to miss it! My boyfriend, brother, cousin and four of my friends came, I’m so thankful and appreciative that they took the effort to come and support me! Truly grateful!
How has winning Your Shot changed your life?
Winning Your Shot has changed my life so much this last year! I’ve been asked to play all around Sydney, the South Coast, Central Coast and a little mini-tour in North Queensland for New Years Eve. Never in my life would I have thought I would win a competition like this, it showed me I can achieve anything I put my mind to. I love entertaining and Your Shot allowed me to express myself, I am truly grateful for the experience and still get goosebumps thinking of the moment I was called up on stage and announced as the winner.
What was the best part about the whole Your Shot process?
The best part of the Your Shot process was meeting like minded people, all here for the music and to be a part of the industry. The training every week was full of laughs, eating chicken nuggets (and training of course). But the best bit was performing on the day in front of my friends and family!
What are your goals for the year ahead?
My goals for the year ahead are to continue learning production, continuing to play all around Sydney as well as interstate, gaining more knowledge and experience and hopefully signing to an agency!
Why did you enter Your Shot?
I entered Your Shot because I’ve always wanted to learn to DJ but did not know where or how to start. I’ve always wanted to be a part of the music industry and I’m so glad I did it!
Any advice for people considering entering Your Shot?
I would say to anyone considering entering that it really is the best experience! No matter if you win or not, you’ll meet so many like minded people all there for the same reason, the music. Every part of the process is so much fun, give it a go!
Where can people catch you performing?
Over the following month you can catch me playing at Chinese Laundry, World Bar, The Royal Oak Hotel Sydney as well as a few gigs here and there on the South Coast 🙂
