Goldbrix is the overall Wild Card Winner of Your Shot Sydney in 2016! Having secured multiple residencies across Sydney since his time in the competition, Goldbrix is now preparing for his journey to Canada for his first international set at Chasing Summer! We sat down with the Sydney local to discuss his preparation for the set, his experience in the Your Shot competition, suggestions for this year’s hopeful applicants and goals for the year ahead!
How is your set preparation going? Any ideas what you’re going to play?
Preparations for Chasing Summer are going well. I have a few tracks I do want to play, but I’m still digging for some music to add to my playlist.
How did your friends and family react when you told them you’d be playing at Chasing Summer in Canada
My friends and family were stoked to see me take the win on Event Day and are proud to see what I have achieved throughout my whole DJing career, especially playing a set in a foreign country!
As the date draws nearer, are the nerves building?
Of course! I would be lying to you if I said that they weren’t, but I’m damn excited to get up on that stage and smash out my set!
Why did you enter Your Shot?
I entered Your Shot so that I could gain more confidence when I’m behind the decks and to challenge myself. Also, the prizes were too good to pass on! I mean, who doesn’t want to play their own set at an international festival!
How has winning Your Shot 2016 changed your life?
Since winning Your Shot, I was given opportunities to play at different clubs and venues that I have wanted to spin at. My favourite event I have played by far was supporting Excision at the Enmore Theatre with the homie Blackjack. I am also getting more exposure post Your Shot. Whether it’s in the club or just out on the street, people come up to me and say hi, or tell me how well I am doing. Small things like these give me the motivation to push myself harder. I am very humbled and thankful for everything that has come my way since Your Shot.
What was the best part of the Your Shot competition?
Apart from taking out the Wild Cards, I would say gaining new friendships and the amount of networking I got to do with the contestants, club promoters, and everyone involved in the music industry.
Has your music style changed since Your Shot?
I played a Trap and Hip Hop set in the competition last year, fast forward to now and my music style hasn’t changed a whole lot. I do like to throw in a bit of Dubstep and Bass house tracks here and there, but my heart belongs to Trap and Hip Hop.
What are your goals for the year ahead?
I would love to play at a club interstate and play at an Australian music festival. These two goals are my aims for this year. I would also like to get into production and start writing up my own music, but I’m taking things one step at a time.
Any upcoming gigs to catch a glimpse of Goldbrix throwing down?
You can catch me throwing down at Chinese Laundry, Pacha Sydney and at Eighty-Six (As part of the Eighty-Sixers) over the next couple of months.
Any advice for people considering entering Your Shot?
Always show confidence and dare yourself to be different amongst the rest!
