The Fields are the overall Wild Card Winners for Your Shot Melbourne in 2017! Having just returned home from their first international set at The CRSSD Festival in the USA, we sat down with them to discuss the highlights of their time abroad, their experience in the Your Shot competition, suggestions for this year’s hopeful applicants and goals for the year ahead.
TALK US THROUGH YOUR TIME AT CRSSD FESTIVAL – FROM THE MOMENT YOU BOARDED THE PLANE TO WHEN YOU TOUCHED DOWN BACK IN AUSTRALIA!
CRSSD was an extraordinary experience from start to finish! We arrived in San Diego and were walking around the festival site beforehand, and we were so nervous and excited to be playing such a big festival. We were invited to play on the main Techno stage, which was so exciting for us as we are big fans of many of the artists who headlined that stage such as Dixon, Kink, Bedouin and Joseph Ashworth. Playing our set was easily one of the biggest highlights of our year, we can’t even describe what it’s like to share such a big stage with some of your favourite artists and play on an amazing sound system, definitely an unforgettable experience!
HOW WERE YOU FEELING AS YOU STEPPED UP ON STAGE?
Nervous!! André had DJ’d for seven years, but I had only DJ’d for one year prior to CRSSD, so I’d never played on a stage anything like this before. Luckily we were able to do a sound check beforehand to get ourselves familiarized, and once we were playing it was just a great feeling, especially when seeing others dancing and enjoying themselves to our set. Once we started playing the nervous energy was blown away and all that was left was just the pure excitement to be able to perform and showcase our sound.
TALK US THROUGH YOUR SET, WHAT DID YOU PLAY?
We both love melodic deep house and techno music, and we always want to play music that evokes some sort of emotion from us, but also makes us (and hopefully others) want to dance. For this set we wanted to stay true to that, but we also wanted to play a set that would compliment the artists who were playing after us. After all, we were warming up, but, we were warming up a techno stage. We spent a lot of time finding that right balance of a melodic with a deeper techno sound which also would be suitable for a warm up time slot during a summer festival, and in the end we’re really proud of the warm up set we created.
WHY DID YOU ENTER YOUR SHOT?
I had wanted to enter for years but I guess the timing wasn’t right and in all honesty I didn’t feel I had the confidence to enter. Then I met Andre and moved to Berlin with him for about 8 months and there he taught me how to DJ. When he moved to Australia with me he tried finding gigs here, but of course that is really difficult and takes time. So he decided to enter Your Shot to help him gain exposure, but last minute I dug up the courage to apply as well with him, and of course we’re so glad we did it together! Your Shot is such a great opportunity for a bedroom DJ and brings together people that want to put themselves out there.
WHAT THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR ENTIRE YOUR SHOT EXPERIENCE?
I think CRSSD festival was easily the best weekend we had in 2017, the whole experience from start to finish was a massive highlight! But we also really enjoyed the competition weekend as we were quite overwhelmed by how friendly and supportive all the contestants were, we made quite a few friends from the experience which is so nice. We love that Your Shot brings together people that share the same drive and passion for music. Before the competition, everyone is tame and composed because performing is always pushing us out of our comfort zone and is therefore a risk in itself. However, once the pressure of performing is gone people show their true colours and come together. We found not only business partners but also friends in this competition.
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE YEAR AHEAD?
We really want to grow our event, ‘Who Loves?’. Our goal is to provide a quality deep house and techno day party in Melbourne that is well respected and helps make a positive contribution to the Melbourne underground scene. Melbourne is a great place to create something, as there is still so much room for electronic dance music to grow. We want to push our career and hopefully look towards playing at more festivals in the future.
ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE CONSIDERING ENTERING YOUR SHOT?
Be genuine and play what you love. We were both apprehensive about whether our sound would be well received at Your Shot, but we decided to play music that was true to us and it really paid off. Whatever your own unique style is, don’t be afraid to take the risk. Also, bring a second USB! Put effort into your set. Be prepared. And after all, don’t be afraid of giving your best.
HOW DID YOU THINK OF/COME UP WITH YOUR DJ NAME?
I originally loved indie/alternative/rock music, and when I started listening to electronic music, I always loved tracks that had an indie vocal or melody to them and I think we show that element in the sets we play. We liked The Fields for a number of reasons but one of the main ones was because it’s sounds like an indie band, and we really liked that.
IF YOU WERE GIVEN THE CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE YOUR SHOT AGAIN, IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY?
No, I think we learned and appreciated every experience from Your Shot for different reasons, and we really appreciated the friendships and connections we made with people over the course of the whole experience.
WHERE CAN WE CATCH YOU OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS?
Catch us at our monthly party ‘Who Loves?’, which is currently being held at Less Than Zero in Prahran. We are also planning a festival and ongoing club nights at the moment.
