DJ Tigerlily – the country’s number 1 female DJ. The queen of Australian dance floors, lover of mermaids and leader of #TEAMUNICORN. Four years ago, she had never touched decks. Now, she is playing at some of the biggest festivals at home and around the globe. She’s toured Asia supporting the legendary Tiësto and is playing regularly across North America including regular shows at the world’s number 3 club, Hakkasan Las Vegas.
We sat down with her to discuss her experience as a Your Shot contestant in 2011, recent KISS MY TIGERLILY shows at Pacha Sydney and goals for the year ahead.
Tell us how you felt heading to the registration day and then receiving a text later saying you were chosen as one of the final 72.
On the Your Shot registration day I was so nervous. I had an excited and really positive feeling in my stomach, but you never know how you’re going to line up next to all the other contestants and seeing so many incredibly fresh, young and talented people at the interview day made it super scary! When I found out that I was chosen as one of the final 72 I was so ecstatic. I remember the exact moment. I was standing in the middle of the city at Circular Quay when I got the call and I just started screaming at the top of my lungs. Everyone was looking at me like I was mad but I didn’t care!
What was the best part of the entire Your Shot experience?
For me, there were two main things that stood out to me about the your shot experience. Firstly, the beautiful friends that I made…Your Shot gave me the opportunity to meet and work with so many talented people that I now call part of my extended family I suppose! For me, that is definitely very rewarding. But secondly, the Your Shot experience really taught me that anything was possible. If you’re able to dedicate your time and energy to something that you’re passionate about, then the world is your oyster. For me, that was DJing and performing, and Your Shot really gave me the belief and the drive to realise that I could achieve even my biggest dreams.
What advice can you give to anyone thinking of registering for Your Shot?
Don’t think about it. Just do it. Even if you don’t get selected, the interview process and day is an extremely helpful experience in itself!
Fast forward to where you are now, what’s been the biggest highlight of your career so far?
There have been so many amazing highlights I seriously cannot pinpoint one. From playing incredible shows and festivals around the world, to spending one on one time with a fan that has explained to me the large impact I’ve had on their life, every moment is beautiful and counts as something super special for me.
You are a massive inspiration for a lot of young people in Australia and across the globe, particularly girls. What advice do you have for young women looking to make a positive name for themselves?
I could talk about this question for hours. But most importantly, I think it is imperative to follow your heart and trust your gut instinct. The music industry (as well of loads of creative industries) are very cut throat and are often dominated by boys clubs! Although this can have both its advantages and disadvantages, it’s important to look at the positives, and be persistent with the vision that you have for yourself.
You recently debuted your very own show, ‘Kiss My Tigerlily’ at Pacha Sydney. How was that experience?
Super nerve-wracking but amazingly fun and inspiring. I have been working towards this show with the team from Pacha Sydney and The Squared Division for a long time now. It was so damn awesome to be able have my dreams turned into reality and I’m very much looking forward to all the KISS MY TIGERLILY shows that are yet to come.
Describe the feeling of stepping on stage at a festival like Stereosonic?
It’s incredible. A huge rush of adrenaline and endorphins through your body and you feel absolutely incredible! There is honestly no other feeling like it, and it’s addictive! I’m so blessed to do what I do.
You’ve played to some massive crowds; do you ever get nervous before jumping on the decks?
Yes and no. 90% of the time these days I’m not nervous however there are some shows that still get my heart racing. For example, playing at Pacha Sydney not long ago for my Kiss My Tigerlily performance gave me serious butterflies in my stomach. Which is weird…I always think I should feel comfortable playing to my home crowd but it’s often the crowd I am most nervous performing to!
Do you have any upcoming releases that we can look forward to?
Yes! Since I finished university in November I’ve been working super hard in the studio on a whole lot of new content. I’m so excited for this year as I’m finally going to be able to release it and show everyone what I’ve been working on. Stay posted…
What’s the craziest thing you’ve witnessed while playing at a gig?
People getting it on in a foam pit. Gross.
What are your goals for the year ahead?
To be healthy, happy and surround myself with positive people. Everything else that happens ontop of that is just an added bonus.
You meet and tour with some pretty big names! Do you still get star struck? If so by who?
Not really. The only exception to this is Katy Perry. She passed me at a party last year and I couldn’t breathe let alone say hello! Haha!
Who are your greatest inspirations, musical or otherwise?
I try to take some form of inspiration from everyone that I meet. I truly believe that every living creature has the potential to positively affect another.
Like Tigerlily, you too have the opportunity to kickstart your DJ career! What are you waiting for?
